In June 1940, at the height of World War II, the U.S. Army sent out bids to 135 automakers across the United States who were seeking a “light reconnaissance vehicle,” listing detailed vehicle requirements. In order to get the order, Willis Overland, Bantam Motor Manufacturing Company and Ford Motor Company in a fierce competition, which also gave birth to the first SUV in the world. The Willys MB has deservedly been hailed as the originator of the SUV and the first SUV in history – the Military Willys MB.
General George Marshall declared, “It has made an outstanding contribution to America’s modern war effort.” Battlefield correspondent EmiePyle summed it up: “He is as faithful as a dog, as strong as a mule, and as agile as a goat.” There is no doubt that Willys MB was a true hero of World War II.
